Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
Hi, I’m Brooklyn Opetaia. I’m the mother to Blue, and he is one and a half. We live in Sydney, Australia.
What does modern motherhood mean to you?
Modern motherhood to me is raising fearless children who are unashamed of who they are.
What are you most proud of when it comes to your journey through motherhood?
I’m really proud of how I’ve taken to motherhood. Naturally, I grapple with the unknown. I think pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood have so much unknown around them. I’ve learned to release the control of what every day held, and I’m really proud of how I’ve taken to motherhood and just really embracing every day for what it is.
What do you find challenging about parenthood?
Something I find challenging in parenthood is that I forget that it isn’t normal to consume so much of other people’s lives online. I have to challenge myself every day not to compare myself to how other people live.
I just want to be someone who doesn’t compare my life, because it’s special how it is.
What is something you know now that you wish you knew earlier?
One day you’ll miss the things that you find really hard right now.
For example, we used to rock Blue to sleep for every single nap. At the time, I found it so hard. I wish I knew in those moments that one day I’d miss exactly that. Now that he’s one and a half, I would do anything to go back and rock my little baby to sleep.
What has Blue taught you about life?
The biggest thing that Blue has taught me is that life will pass you by if you’re not intentional.
I just try to be so intentional every single day with the way I teach him, the way I watch him, the way we communicate, because I want to hold on to these moments. He’s really taught me how precious life is.
